It was divinely providential, acknowledged most mamas of the ton, how time could change a man. A mere younger son the year before, a notorious prankster and womanizer, Gareth Lloyd was now the dignified Marquess of Roth. And the sudden possession of such a large fortune made him the catch of the Season.

He was also everything Miss Faith Ackerly despised. To her, a rake and a libertine could no more become a pillar of society than a leopard could change its spots. For a maid as prim as she was pretty, Gareth’s wealth was no more an inducement to wed than his title. Yet those warm brown eyes did not show the soul of a scoundrel. They promised to protect and cherish, to fend off any foe…though they indeed tempted her with the pleasures of the bedroom. No, no act of God could make her desire Gareth. But a leap of faith could lead to true love.

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

“Do you think he’s out there somewhere?” All the girls looked out into the shadowed gardens, where dozens of daring couples had already disappeared.

“Well, he has to be somewhere. He’s not in the ballroom anymore.”

Someone opened the doors, allowing the noise of laughter, music and conversation to escape the ballroom.  The girls turned as a group, disappearing first from view, and then from hearing, the sounds of the ball dimming to a dull but welcome roar in the background as the doors shut again behind them.

Above on the balcony, Faith rolled her eyes, again looking out into the garden. She knew, without question, that Roth was the ‘he’ to whom the gaggle referred. Laying one hand on her heart, she reached the other out into the inky blackness. “My lord Gareth,” she said in a voice laced with exaggerated pleading. “If you’re out there, anywhere, please reveal yourself to me so that I can also bask in your noble glow.”

“Actually, Miss Ackerly, I’m a bit closer than you might have thought.”

Reviews:

“The cast is strong led by a spunky female who prefers being a spinster on the shelf rather than finding a husband; let alone forced to marry a wastrel whom she loves.  Readers will enjoy Deneane Clark’s lighthearted historical frolic.” ~ Harriet Klausner, Genre Go Round Reviews

Faith is a novel other romances aspire to become. Humorous, intelligent and with the precise amounts of tension – sexual and hazardous – that draw a reader in and don’t let go.  Clark’s novel shows her to be a novelist on par with the genre’s greatest.” ~ Audrey, Night Owl Reviews

I so loved Grace, and enjoyed it from cover to cover.I have been waiting (not so paitently) for your next book. It seems from the excerpt that I will get no sleep the day it comes out, because I will not be able to put Faith down either.

  2. Chris,

Thank you so much! I’m getting anxious, myself, to see it in print and on shelves. I hope it lives up to your expectations. Have a beautiful day.

Sometimes series can drag along and not feel if they are really going anywhere, but I can not say that about “Faith” after reading “Grace” I was really most interested in Mercy’s story, now I not only have that to look forward to but Charity’s as well. If I am not mistaken from what I was reading between the lines poor “Ash” and “Sebastian” two tiger already caught by the tale, they just don’t know it yet. I am also most excited to find out that you will be continuing the series by traveling back and forward with families..those are my favorite stories to ready, the characters become family and their stories become important to you. Great Job…Looking Forward to More. Sabrina

    • Sabrina,

Truly lovely to hear from you, and thank you so very much! We’ll have to see what happens with those two … Mercy’s pretty persistent, but Sebastian’s had a long time to learn how to avoid her. Ashe might not be quite so adept. These characters have become rather important to me, so I thought it nice to give them a past and a future. Let’s hope that works out!

I hope this finds you well, and that you have a wonderful 2010.

Faith was AWESOME!! I don’t think I’ve ever read a book cover to cover like I did this one. The story was so quick and full of energy, I just couldn’t put it down. Then because it had been a while, I picked up Grace and re-read it. You’ve done such a good job with all of the characters. I felt like I was there in the stories with the girls. Absolutely can’t wait for Charity, but am most anxious for Mercy. She’s such a spitfire. Looking forward to having both books signed and seeing you again. Hugs to you from a fellow Rock Hillian!!

    • Kathy,

Thank you so much, and I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I’m really looking forward to the signing, as well. It will be lovely to see you there. Hugs back, much love to you and your beautiful family.
